CALL OUT for North West based BESEA Actors!

Updated: Nov 22, 2022

CLOWNING and BOUFFON WORKSHOP WITH ISABELLA LEUNG, finalist of The Women’s Prize for Playwriting 2021. Her play A BOUFFON PLAY ABOUT HONG KONG, is programmed at HOME Manchester in February 2023.

About the workshop

This FREE 3 hour workshop will be divided into two parts: clowning and bouffon. Using games, devising and improvisations, we find pleasure in the game (le jeu) and discover the humour within ourselves. ‘Finding our inner-clown’ is easier said than done, but as we create a safe space to share laughter with each other, this workshop could be the first step in channeling your inner clown into creative practice.

What is Bouffon?

“Laughter helps the bouffon to beautifully parody the bastards who put him on the blacklist. Laughter helps freedom.” – Philippe Gaulier

Bouffon is the perfect way to explore the absurdity of our struggle as a marginalised group of artists. We will create and embrace our unique grotesque characters, make ourselves look unrecognisable and ridiculous to liberate our imagination. The bouffon workshop will involve ensemble work and creative play on voices, bodies and words to build a foundation of mad and surreal bouffon sketches.

Isabella Leung (she/her) is an actor, theatre maker and writer from Hong Kong. She graduated from the University of Manchester with BA(hons) Drama, and trained in comedy and clowning at École Philippe Gaulier, France. https://www.isabellaleung.com/
